Settlement in New York
The early occupants were attracted to New York because of the fertile grounds, the abundant faunas, and the clean rivers. The area had abundant waterways surrounding the land which later made the area a perfect location for Algonquian tribes. Algonquian tribes resided on the banks of the harbor during the time of European exploration. The first settlers of New York were the Dutch. Although the Dutch first settled the land the first, the first European explorer to arrive on the land and mapped the region was an Italian explorer names Giovanni da Verrazano. Giovanni landed on Staten Island in 1524. In 1609, Henry Hudson, an English Captain working for the Dutch West India Company, was looking for a passage to India. Ultimately, he failed to find this passage, but did discover this newfound land. The river that he sailed up was later named after him, Hudson River. After his return to England, the Dutch laid claim to this land because he traveled in their name. The East India Company soon after sent a ship with merchandise and had a very successful trade with the natives. Because of the success more voyagers left to this new land. Manhattan was an island with rude houses; the natives gave this name to the island. The very first governor of New Netherlands was appointed by the West India Company, and his name was Peter Minuits in 1625. Under his administration a foundation was laid for the manors of New York.
