Intermontane West
The Intermontane West is very clearly defined; it is extended from the Rockies to the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Range, and stretched from Central British Columbia to México. The Intermontane West is founded literally amongst major mountain ranges on each side, as its name suggests. This region has several blocky mountains, basins and plateau country. This region is generally very dry, but it does include different climate realms. These realms are: the sub-humid, semiarid, moderately arid and extremely arid zone. What separates these zones is the amount of precipitation received by each.
Irrigated farming is very successful in the Intermontane West region. Because the weather of this area is so dry farmers were very dependent on irrigation for a suitable amount of water. Because of the rough and dry climate, ranching also became popular in the Intermontane West. Ranchers ran different animals on an open range. The ranches are usually on dry basins or on top of plateaus. Mining is also an important contributor to the economy in this area. Vegas is also a major metropolitan area and is known as a major tourist center. Las Vegas is the largest metropolitan area in the Intermontane West. Part of the success of Las Vegas is that many states bordering Nevada don’t have legal gambling.
